A History of British Serial Killing: The Shocking Account of Jack the Ripper, Harold Shipman and Beyond Customer Reviews
:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Interesting but not and easy read : You must be wanting to read this book to read it. It can be hard to track at times and doesn't read smoothly such as many text books. It has very interesting accounts but if your not paying attention you'll be rereading. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jo A. Hinkle -- Well-researched and insightful. : Informative and carefully researched. I'm glad the author included a bibliography. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from H C BAKER -- Excellent book : An extremely well researched and written book that makes for rather depressing reading. Unusually, Wilson focuses on the victims of serial killers rather than the perpetrators. The continued vulnerability of more marginalised members, such as runaways and the homeless, brings into question what kind of society we are. An important book that should be read by both the public at large and policy makers. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cynthia Haberman -- Excellent book on society's responsibility for serial killing : Interesting take on serial killing-- from the victims and society's perspective. Many of the victims are vulnerable people that very few people miss. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ms. Erica Wildwood -- Shocking : I have a horrible feeling that most of the reviewers here have a fascination with serial killers (which I fimd unhealthy and prurient) since none has expressed fury that we live in a society that so devalues certain groups. Prostitution is a product of poverty. Some of the Yorkshire Ripper's victims - described by the police at the time as "good time girls" - were forced onto the streets because the fathers of their children failed to support them, benefits were (and still are) grossly inadequate yet their kids needed food and shoes. And what about the men who ab/use prostitutes? They're the ones who ought to be criminalised. Prof Wilson states we live in a patriarchal and capitalist society, and since the book was written inequality has only increased. I agree with him that a society that regards certain demographics as valueless does not cause serial murder but makes it easier. Am I the only one who is outraged by this? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paige -- Simply Written : These series of books have been a fantastic read into the science and psychology behind serial killers and their actions. I have read all three and was impressed at how well they have been written, particularly in a manner that can be understood easily if you are unfamiliar with in-depth language. Eg: the use of small, short and simple words. Overall these books are definitely on my recommended to others list! An impressive product and an impressive read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vicuña -- Engrossing and a little different : I was intrigued by the premise behind this book. The author is keen to understand how serial killers ‘happen’, that is the extent to which and the reasons they chose certain victims. It’s a relatively new phenomenon, and there are some strange facts. For example, I’d have thought there were always serial killers in action. It seems none were recorded over a couple of decades in the 1920s and 30s. Why? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from O. Cromwell -- A bit dissapointing : I rate and respect the author but i think his attention on victims in this book is a poor emphasis. the victims of serial killers are often forgotten and whilst this is unjust it does not help in any discussion of serial killers. The study of such killers remains the focus as the intention is to deter or catch these rare creatures but victims will always exist as killers determine their prey. A good book but not the tour de force i expected from this highly engaging academic ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Pauline S -- Interesting but rather depressing read : I think this book would be very useful if you were writing an essay or thesis about British serial killers. The author is an ex prison governor, so has a unique insight into criminals and murderers. It's one if the books I wished I hadn't read, not because it is badly written or includes lurid details; on the contrary it is well researched and restrained, but the subject matter naturally makes uncomfortable reading.
